Music And Reverbation

How Reverb works:

I recently was asked to post something about reverb and how to use it best. I’m not going to claim to know all there is to know about reverb but I’ll do my best to share what I know. I’ll also try not to use too much geek speak when explaining things. let’s start by defining some of the most important features.

Reverb decay – This is how you control how long the reverb lasts before it fades out. Depending on what you are going for, this can be long and washy, or short and barely noticeable. keep in mind though that even though you might not immediate hear what a reverb is doing, the brain is exceptional at picking up these subtleties & can make a huge difference between a flat, sterile and lifeless sound & a realistic sound. By controlling these, it’s possible to use reverb rhythmically. You can have it fade after a 1/4 bar or 1/2 bar. Slightly adjusting this can create a bit of swing or groove to your mix.

Diffusion – Diffusion is created when a sound reflects off a surface. A flater surface will have less diffusion because it simply hits the wall and bounces back. If you are in a cave, the surface is going to have all kinds of angles causing your sound to bounce and echo in a more complex way, creating a reverb that is less like the original sound. Less diffusion will have a brighter sound while more diffusion will make the reverb darker.

Reflection – Reflection is similar to diffusion in that it has to do with the angle at which soundwaves bounce around. As soundwaves spread throughout a space and bounce off all the encompassing surfaces, they will undoubtedly bounce back into eachother causing the waveforms to change, phase cancel eachother out, or to double up and increase in volume. Each of these reflections hit the ears at different times creating the full effect.

Predelay – This is the time between the original sound playing and the reverb reacting to that sound. Adding predelay can help the attack of a sound come across much cleaner as it’s not yet effected by the reverb. A longer predelay can create a short echo or a slapback type effect.

Types of reverb -

Plate reverb – A plate reverb is named that way because they used to send sound to a “plate” of metal which it would reverberate off of. It doesn’t take up as much dimensional space & thus doesn’t bury & blur sounds in the way other types of reverb do. It tends to blend with the sound more and helps give sounds more impact. It’s a cleaner reverb in that it doesn’t take up as much space. It can be great for a smooth sounding vocal that doesn’t get lost in the mix. Although plate reverb is great, you will want other reverbs used to add depth and dimension to your mix.

Gated reverb- This isn’t really a type of reverb, but more the effect that is put after the reverb effect. This allows you to make a sound bigger but not have a long tail (or decay). This effect was used a lot in the 80′s (some might say overused). By setting a gate effect after your reverb, you can adjust the gate to silence your sound once it goes beneath a certain volume. This effect can be used to clean up your mix so it doesn’t get too muddy. Too much reverb used in the wrong way can drastically lower the quality of your mix.

Spring reverb – This type of reverb was popularized in guitar amps. The sound is created by metal springs and gives a vintage feel to some instruments. Great for a more lo-fi vibe. It’s not smooth like other reverbs, but can add a different character to instruments.

Hall reverb – Adds depth and dimension & fills in gaps in the mix but keeps in the background where it doesn’t clutter the mix. Using a large room size but a shorter delay time can help with a cleaner mix (even though it is not a natural sound found in the real world). Using too much can push important sounds to the back of the mix, but can add further thickness and space to sounds with long decay like pads or piano. Slower songs can typically handle longer reverb times.

Room reverb – Similar to hall but typically has a shorter decay and smaller size than hall reverb. Good for guitar or drums to give it a realistic space in your mix. A realistic space can be important when using acoustic instruments.

Convulsion reverb – Imagine if you wanted to “sample” the reverberation of a specific location, be it a stadium or a bathroom. Convulsion reverb makes that possible. This can give you some very interesting options. Perhaps adding the space of a wooden barrel or the inside of a metal pipe. This could be a powerful asset in creating both real world environments or alien environments & can be a sound designer’s best friend. Since this reverb is essentially sampled and then applied to a sound, there isn’t a whole lot of flexibility to a specific reverb setting but can offer results unavailable any other way.

Chamber reverb – Also known as an echo chamber, this reverb was created by sending a speaker into a specially designed room and a microphone strategically placed to capture the reverb effect and added to the original signal.

Reverse reverb – This effect is where you hear the reverb effect before the original source sound. Used a lot as a vocal or drum effect. This can be accomplished pretty easily in the digital domain by reversing your original source sound, adding reverb to the reversed sound, rendering the results and once again reversing so that the reverb plays in reverse while the original sound plays forward.

Reverb tips:

In most situations, you will want to set your reverb at the end of your effects chain. Basically you’ll want to dial in your clean sound before smoothing it out with reverb. If you are wondering whether to add reverb or delay last, I’d suggest reverb. This will give you the most natural sound and make it easier to get the effect you are looking for (unless you are going for something unusual). In some cases I will add a compressor after the reverb to boost it’s effect.

Reverb on send/returns – By creating a send track you can set up 2 or 3 reverb types and assign a specified amount of any or all of them to whichever instrument you want. Not only will this save CPU on your computer, it is great for placing multiple sounds in one space (like your drums). Since all your reverb will be sent to your send track, you will have more control of it’s overall volume & eq.

I personally like to eq out reverb frequencies below 120hz. Sometimes higher depending on the instrument.

Another use for a reverb send is to switch it to mono and pan your reverb just like you would an instrument. You can keep it in one spot or automate your panning. You can do this with more than one reverb send if you like. this should give you some interesting results.

Using more than 1 reverb on a sound can give you more a realistic effect at times. this would typically consist of a short reverb and a long reverb.

Create great pad sounds with reverb by creating a long reverb of several seconds (even 10-15 seconds can sound good) and setting the wet/dry setting to 80%-100%. The reverb smooths out whatever sound you run through it. I like using a simple synth melody or vocals but have gotten great results from less conventional sounds as well.

Sidechaining reverb tricks – This is another widely used trick in dance music. For this effect, you would typically want to have a reverb send/return track and throw your sidechain compressor on the track. Sidechain it to your kick drum for that pumping effect or you can sidechain it to the original dry sound you are adding reverb to. This will push the effect down while the original sound plays for a cleaner sound and then the reverb will rush in after the original sound stops playing. You can get varying results by adjusting the threshold.

Accent your groove with Reverb  - By adjusting the attack and release envelopes. You don’t have to just use reverb to add dimension to your song, you can have it assist the overall feel of your song by adding it to any instrument that could use it. You’d be surprised with the results you get when using this trick correctly. You can set your decay to fall to silence just before the next beat or bar or any multiple that works for you. I like 1/4 note or 1/2 note intervals.  Making slight adjustments can give your groove  a more rushed or laid back feel. By adjusting your predelay, you can change the groove as well.

Experiment and have fun with this wonderful but often misunderstood effect.

Healthy Chicken Breast Salad Diet Day 2 Successful

Good evening Readers!

Day 2 of diet is sucessful. 
Long time never diet of just eating apples and salad for 2 months.
Now different diet though.Oh before I go on, im the bulky type but think too big already so should tone down. Remembered when i just at apples and salad for 2 months i lost 25 kg haha. But of course gotta need a little intake of carbohydrates as it is important. Yes so...
Since I want to slim down but AT THE SAME TIME BULK even more, 
steamed skinless chicken breast in a salad main vegetable lettuce top with tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, caesar sauce, a tinsy-winzy bit of chilli sauce,thousand island and mayo is ideal. 

Drink comes with either milk, milo or banana protein shake. Dessert is pineapple/mangoes. Snacks in between will be apples.
Can I maintain this for another 2-4 more months?
Anyone knows any more recipe for healthy chicken breast salad?

[Updated]T-ara’s former back-up dancer claims Jiyeon once slapped Hwayoung

Among the many that are stepping forward to offer some more insight on the T-ara controversy, is a netizen who claims to be a former T-ara back-up dancer.

The post is going viral online, and in it, the dancer describes in detail of a time Jiyeon had slappedHwayoung across the face.

It reads:

“I am a member of Hot Chicks, an exclusive dance team for T-ara, and am also working withDavichi, KARA, Brown Eyed Girls, Rainbow Pixie, and more.

It was around the time the Japanese concert took place. We were getting big with our “Lovey Dovey” shuffle dance after Hwayoung was admitted, and getting ready to perform “Roly Poly” for our year-end performance.

During one of the rehearsals, it was a situation where Kwang Soo had jam-packed our schedules, so both the dancers and the members of T-ara who had just completed their day’s work were extremely sensitive and on edge.

Still, everyone was mustering up their last bit of strength and practicing, when Hwayoung messed up a little bit of the choreography.

Seeing this, Jiyeon and Soyeon then sarcastically scoffed at her, saying, ‘Since you already decided to join, you should maybe work a little harder.’

Hwayoung then became a little depressed, but the dance leader mediated the situation and the rehearsal resumed.

But Hwayoung maintained an uncomfortable expression on her face, and Jiyeon who saw this slapped Hwayoung across the cheek and told her that because she had come in late to the already-established group T-ara, she needed to act sensibly and to rehearse without that expression on her face.

The atmosphere became extremely tense, and Hyomin took Jiyeon outside, telling her that she should just be the bigger person.

Even after Hwayoung’s ‘exposure’ incident, everyone was indifferent towards her, rather than comforting.

After the incident, T-ara went on hiatus to prepare for “Day By Day” and because of events with Davichi and Brown Eyed Girls, I could only see T-ara on TV.

Seeing them on the small-screen, I thought that the girls’ relationship with Hwayoung had improved, but these girls who are all grown don’t want to sit by her in the car so they blatantly play rock paper scissors right in front of her face.”

Post like these attesting to the bullying attacks against Hwayoung continue to surface on portal site community boards, causing netizens to become all the more eager to uncover the truth.

1.) The leader of the dance team has come forward to deny these claims and Kim Kwang Soo himself has also stated that this story has been fabricated in the latest article here.

Petition asking for the disbandment of T-ara gains over 71,700 signatures

With more and more individuals growing frustrated over the controversy that first surfaced with the controversial tweets of the T-ara members and the announcement of Hwayoung‘s contract termination with Core Contents Media, criticisms have been pouring in for the girl group.

A petition has even been created online asking for the disbanding of the group, with the title, “Petition for the Disbanding of T-ara“. The petition’s description states, “As a group who does not take the stage seriously, and as a group who is taking the lead in the spread of bullying, a big social problem, we ask for the disbanding of this group. It seems the time has come for T-ara, a group who doesn’t even greet their sunbaes if they don’t believe the other artist to be popular enough, to face the verdict of the public. Please dissolve this group.”

The petition has so far gained over 71,700 online signatures with numbers rising quickly.

Argh..... One part of me do not want T-ara to disband, I just want KKS and CCM to shut down.
Then again, I do not like bullies and meanies.. There are not concrete proof of hwayoung getting bullied by the t-ara members, but i guess it is not hard to link. 
Oh I also found out that T-ara will be not be endorsing products in any marketing campaigns as advertisers have terminated their contract or will not be extending the contract. This is a huge blow for CCM I say as advertising pulls in a huge amount of $$$(money) for the company. 
Then I also found out that Eunjung did not attend VIP showing for "I Am A King" whose is supposedly her senior and her senior expected some support. The reason that Eunjung 은정 did not attend the VIP showing is most probably due to the recent controversy between T-ara 티아라 and Hwayoung 화영. This will shatter the image of her, KKS and CCM as this is a very important event.
Another article i found on korean media sites is that a backup dancer of T-ara reported that Jiyeon 지연 has slapped Hwayoung at backstage/back room. KKS claimed that he(and CCM) has reported this to the korean police but the police reported that there not such report submitted by KKS(CCM). Is KKS faking and lying again ? ._________________________________________________.
Another article stated that KKS has met with the parents of Hwayoung and her twin sister, Hyoyoung. The article mentioned that he explained the situation and again re-emphasized that the termination of Hwayoung is not due to the bullying. Furthermore, it stated that Hwayoung's parents were understanding and wished all the best for T-ara and Hwayoung. However, in my opinion, even if this were the truth, I think no one is going to believe KKS as the claim by him of "T-ara accounts getting hacked" are affecting his trustworthiness. 
Then another article claimed that Hwayoung was responsible for Jiyeon's Bad Attitude. It was mentioned that in 2010 Hwayoung did not obliged to the manager(T-ara's Manager) for preparation of their concert then Hyomin gave her a piece of her mind. STill Hwayoung did not listen then Jiyeon came in and went into a heated argument with her. After that, it claims Jiyeon was showing attitude while performing.

Here's the videoWell, what I can say I do not know if this is true or not because neither the members nor hwayoung told the media this. 

As much as i really want to say this. . . . I want to say that i seriously don't like Kim Kwang Soo 김광수 a.k.a KKS and CCM. . . . I am not anti-tara and I can't bear to anti-t-ara . . . I just have a neutral feeling towards them now. . . . It means I do not love them anymore but last time i love them as a hardcore fan . . . Bought not all but most of their albums . . . .

Netizens dig up evidence of Hwayoung being bullied? T-Jinyo group formed demanding truth

Amidst the heated controversy surrounding Core Contents Media, T-ara, and Hwayoung, netizens have discovered further evidence to prove the speculated rumors regarding Hwayoung being bullied to be true.

On November 6, 2011, a post titled, “Being an outcast.. Really is difficult and tiresome“, was uploaded onto Nate Pann, an online community forum, under the username ‘Suk Ryu’ (Ryu is Hwayoung’s last name).

Although the post has yet to be confirmed, netizens have speculated it to indeed be Hwayoung, as it well matched her current situation.

The message read:

Hello. I’ve been contemplating whether I should post this or not, but have decided to write a few things..

The group I’m in is… A group everybody will know just by revealing the group’s initial.

I’m a new member in the group, so it has been very awkward and because I’m also very timid, I’m unable to approach them easily… That’s one of the reasons why I’m becoming an outcast.

The original members must have strongly opposed my addition to the group…

I’m basically treated as if I’m an invisible at the dorm.
But when the cameras are rolling, they would suddenly have their arms around my shoulders.

When we’re practicing… I really feel like I’m going to die.
When I make a little mistake, I’d get criticized hearing things like, ‘You can’t even do this?’ and would get cursed at.

Even right now, I’m alone since they all went grocery shopping without me..
They’ll be back in a few hours, but I want to just forget about my singing career and leave.

However, this is the path I decided to take and I’m the one who decided to join, so it’s hard to do so.

I feel a bit better now that I’ve written this.

Criticisms have been rising for T-ara as more “evidence” is surfacing in regards to the bullying. In addition, a website titled T-Jinyo (“We Demand the Truth from T-ara”) was formed and is rapidly seeing an increase in members by the hour. 

Well, as you read, you can see it sound so much like Hwayoung's situation. If this is indeed true, I will just.... feel.... heartbroken... :( You guys as well as me hopes that our love for t-ara won't be crushed T.T

CCM’s CEO Kim Kwang Soo interviewed regarding Hwayoung’s departure

Before I begin, I'll state my opinions in red over each interview questions. If you find them offensive, do let me know!

On the heels of the earth-shattering news of Hwayoung‘s departure from T-ara, Kim Kwang Soo, the CEO of Core Contents Media, sat down for a quick interview with South Korean media outlet Ilgan Sports.

The press release is a bit vague. It seems to have actually inflated the controversy.

I can’t reveal everything. It’s the least amount of courtesy for the departing member. Please think carefully about who will be hurt if the truth is revealed.

Me: Kim Kwang Soo, tell me why you can't reveal the truth? Are you scared because you are THE ONE who is IN THE WRONG? Okay let's say its to show courtesy for Hwayoung, Hwayoung isn't feeling scared. 

There were reports of bullying. Are the fights between the members a big reason in the departure?

No. The relationship between the members are not a big problem. In fact, once you take control of a team, small problems can erupt. The bigger problem is the hardships faced by the staff members.

Me: CAUGHT RED HANDED! Before, you mentioned that their(T-ara) accounts were hacked, but now you are saying that there are no fights? Furthermore, you mentioned in the full report that the T-ara members do not want Hwayoung to leave. Such irony, I see.

The problems with the staff was also in the official press release. What kind of problems existed?

I don’t want to go into detail, nor do I want to make personal attacks. But the staff were very tired after driving for the entire night and taking care of hair and makeup. There were several managers who cried, saying they wanted to quit. Although the artists are important, I believe that the sweat and tears of the staff are equally as important. I could not stand by watching this destruction of teamwork any longer.

Me: I don't really have any points to argue with this statement. However, is this excuse relevant enough? We need proof, proof equals TALK FROM THE STAFF THEMSELVES.

If you go into a little more detail, would that not quell the controversy?

There were so many issues, but I really do not want to shed light on any of them, so I am keeping quiet. There were many examples of yelling at the members and breaking down the teamwork. How would the T-ara members feel, who had trained for over three years? I hope this issue is not inflated any further, (Hwayoung) I hope you stay quiet.

Me: "(Hwayoung) I hope you stay quiet". Isn't this the same saying as "hwayoung, i hope you shut up"? The public won't look down or anti t-ara if you reveal the conflicts and teamwork problems in T-ara. Because we QUEENS already LOVE THEM, so why should we anti them? We are people who are very understanding.

SBS PD states he will no longer cast T-ara, T-ara concert may flop

Good evening Readers!

Following the T-ara controversy with member Hwayoung being kicked out of the group, Hwayoung tweeted and implied that the situation presented to the public was, “facts without truth“. This resulted in a mudslinging contest, where CCM(Kim Kwang Soo) retaliated by revealing the dark side of Hwayoung. However, many believe that Hwayoung is falsely being put in a bad light and have stepped up to the plate.

An SBS PD, after seeing the controversy unfold, defended Hwayoung by tweeting that he would no longer cast T-ara.

It seems as though the tweet was deleted shortly afterwards, however it sparked yet another round of controversy with fans now leaning towards Hwayoung being the victim of bullying and unfair treatment.

Due to this controversy, it’s been reported that T-ara is also facing issues with their upcoming concert, as all but 600 tickets to their concert were returned.

Okay time for my personal opinion from reading this article!
As you all know, Hwayoung's tweet "facts without truth" or in a better way to say it "fake facts", this has sparked the controvery between her, T-ara, T-ara's Staff, Kim Kwang Soo and CCM Music Entertainment to be even more intense. In my personal opinion, I believe something is very wrong. To further support my stand in saying that something is very wrong, Hyoyoung who is Hwayoung's twin sister have tweeted " ............... ". There isn't any claim of this tweet relating to the controversy however definitely it is not hard to link it.
I am having a very confused heart right now, I do not know where to say "YAY! T-ara concert will be canceled!! " or "T-ara concert should not be canceled even though there is the controversy": I just wish CCM would take a HUGE BLOW onto their faces. I think not only me, but you guys(and girls) out there also have been feeling uneasy since last Friday right?
So do you support the SBS PD or not?

[BREAKING] CCM announces Hwayoung will leave T-ara

HWAYOUNG WILL BE LEAVING T-ARA AS ANNOUNCED BY CCM, KIM KWANG SOO. 

T-ara‘s parent company Core Contents Media announced today that one of its members, Hwayoung, will be leaving the group effective immediately.

CCM’s CEO, Kim Kwang Soo, announced the departure in a press release written by the president himself. “In deference to the complaints by T-ara’s staff of 19 people (5 stylists, 7 hair & makeup, 5 on-site managers, 2 team mangers), Hwayoung’s contract as an artist will be voided effective immediately with no conditions.”

Kim Kwang Soo denied any correlation with the recent controversy that erupted following tweets from the T-ara members that were interpreted by many as one-sided bullying against Hwayoung. “We wish to impress upon the fact that this has nothing to do with the ‘bullying’ reports surrounding T-ara,” CCM said. “Although the staff of Core Contents Media stayed up into early morning discussing with the T-ara members who all wanted to stay with Hwayoung, we apologize in saying that we could not forsake the arguments of the staff members.”

“We deeply apologize for the many incidents which made everyone who loved T-ara nervous and worried, and we have nothing but sadness to convey such an unsettling incident on their third anniverary. We also apologize again to the T-ara members and wish Hwayoung all the best as a powerful rapper,” CCM concluded.

Hwayoung will leave T-ara after 20 months, leaving original members Boram, Qri, Eunjung, Soyeon, Hyomin, and Jiyeon, as well as new member Ahreum.

Okay now let's go to my personal views.
If you take a good look at this sentence " deference to the complaints by T-ara’s staff of 19 people " and "Although the staff of Core Contents Media stayed up into early morning discussing with the T-ara members who all wanted to stay with Hwayoung, we apologize in saying that we could not forsake the arguments of the staff members.", does this mean that Hwayoung leaving the group has nothing to do with the bullying controversy between her and her members(Eunjung, Hyomin, Jiyeon, Soyeon, Ahreum)? It actually have something to do with the the staff of t-ara instead? I am not in any way bias with my opinion but it can be clearly be seen with these two sentence of reference,  FULL PROOF.
Now a whole new mystery is created. 
WHAT IS THE EXACT REASON THAT HWAYOUNG HAVE TO LEAVE THE GROUP?

What is the big announcement from CCM? T-ara breakup? Member kick out?

Good evening Readers!

With the recent developments over the past couple of days, T-ara fans have been put in a state of panic.

First, tweets from the members of T-ara “teasing” Hwayoung after their Budokan concert caused quite a bit of controversy. Shortly after, their agency CCM (Core Contents Media) announced that they would be making a major announcement regarding T-ara. If that wasn’t enough, member Hwayoung, who was not too long ago in the spotlight for her nipple slip wardrobe malfunction, left an ambiguous tweet. Immediately after, fans were stating that Boram unfollowed Hwayoung on Twitter.

A lot has happened to state the least and it seems as if the members of T-ara have been bullyingHwayoung.

Fans are speculating that CCM forced Hwayoung to do an intentional nipple slip during their Inkigayo performance months ago, and because she did it, the members are mad at her and bullying her. This incident would’ve been considered a complete accident, if it weren’t for a previous group from CCM, known as SeeYa (disbanded), who also had a nip-slip incident. Mind you, CCM is the only agency that has ever had nip-slip incidents in the history of live music programs.

allkpop reached out to industry insiders to gain more perspective on this matter, and here’s what we learned (these are rumors):

*CCM forced both nip-slip incidents as a publicity stunt
*Member Jiyeon’s live strip cam incident in the past was leaked by CCM on purpose, and then covered up by CCM because Jiyeon was misbehaving, to teach her a lesson (i.e. we can ruin your career if you don’t follow orders)
*The big announcement is either that Hwayoung is going to be kicked out of the group or that it may even be Jiyeon, because she is still “misbehaving”
*The big announcement may possibly be that T-ara is disbanding completely.
*All of this is another major publicity stunt for an upcoming event or promotion

These speculations have come from idol group managers, reporters and industry insiders who have been around T-ara over the past few weeks, and choose to remain anonymous.
